Medical Laboratory Technician Shift: 3rd Shift 7 Nights On / 7 Nights Off Job Description / Summary We are seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician I (MLT) to join a fast-paced clinical laboratory on a 3rd-shift, 7-on/7-off schedule. This position performs laboratory testing and analysis on patient specimens to provide accurate clinical information used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for maintaining high standards of quality, accuracy, efficiency, and safety while following established testing procedures, quality assurance requirements, and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical judgment, troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with laboratory staff and leadership. Responsibilities Perform clinical laboratory testing and analysis on patient specimens according to established procedures and quality standards. Produce accurate and timely laboratory results to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Follow established testing procedures, laboratory policies, and quality assurance and quality control guidelines. Monitor equipment and testing systems and document appropriate corrective actions for nonconforming events. Exercise clinical judgment when prioritizing testing and identifying potential technical or operational issues. Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and test systems and coordinate with technical support or service specialists when necessary. Prepare reagents and maintain adequate supplies and materials required for laboratory testing. Monitor laboratory inventory and supplies while helping minimize waste and unnecessary departmental expenses. Assist with the review and revision of laboratory procedures, policies, and accreditation-related documentation. Maintain compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements, including CAP, TJC, OSHA, and CLIA standards. Maintain accurate and complete laboratory documentation in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements. Communicate issues, concerns, critical information, and potential patient-care impacts clearly between shifts and with laboratory leadership. Participate in staff meetings, departmental projects, task forces, process improvements, and implementation of operational changes. Follow established laboratory safety procedures when handling potentially infectious specimens, chemicals, reagents, and equipment. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory work environment. Perform additional laboratory duties as assigned. Qualifications / Requirements Associate degree or equivalent education and training as defined by CLIA required. Must be MLT registry eligible or equivalent. MLT(ASCP), MLT(AMT), or equivalent certification required within one year of hire. Completion of an accredited U.S. military medical laboratory training program may meet applicable education/certification requirements. ASCP certification or equivalent preferred/current certification accepted as applicable. Knowledge of clinical laboratory testing procedures, quality assurance, quality control, and laboratory safety practices. Familiarity with CLIA, CAP, TJC, OSHA, and other applicable clinical laboratory regulatory requirements. Ability to recognize testing or instrumentation issues, troubleshoot appropriately, and escalate problems when necessary. Ability to accurately prepare reagents, manage laboratory supplies, and maintain required testing materials. Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate results in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment. Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to effectively communicate between shifts and with laboratory leadership. Ability to exercise sound clinical judgment and appropriately prioritize laboratory testing and workload. Ability to work independently during an overnight/third-shift schedule while collaborating effectively with the laboratory team. Must be comfortable working around biohazardous/infectious materials, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.
