Director, Insurance Accounting · New York, NY

Our client, a multi-entity life insurance organization in New York, is hiring a Director of Insurance Accounting to run statutory reporting and operational accounting for its insurance companies.

Responsibilities

• Lead insurance accounting across premiums, policy liabilities, claim reserves, reinsurance settlements, cash and treasury.


• Own quarterly and annual statutory statement filings with regulators and rating agencies, including state-specific requirements.


• Act as the main point of contact for external audits and state insurance department examinations.


• Research statutory guidance, adopt new standards, and advise on the accounting impact of new products and transactions.


• Review monthly and quarterly reporting packages and the reconciliations behind them.


• Work with the investment accounting group on intercompany balances, investment income allocation and consolidated reporting.


• Build and maintain internal controls over insurance accounting in a multi-entity setting.


• Manage and coach the finance team, and oversee banking and third-party administrator relationships, including periodic TPA audits.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.


• 8+ years in life insurance; holding company or multi-entity experience strongly preferred.


• Strong statutory accounting knowledge, plus working knowledge of life insurance GAAP, including reinsurance and treaty settlements.


• Able to research SAP questions and reach technical conclusions.


• Experience managing people, processes and projects.


• Solid grasp of general ledger systems and control design; familiarity with insurance-specific accounting software is helpful.


• Comfortable partnering with actuarial on reserves and assumption changes.


• Clear communicator with senior leadership and external parties, used to working across offices.
