Commercial HVAC Install & Service Technician


The Commercial HVAC Install & Service Technician is responsible for installing, servicing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing HVAC systems in commercial and light residential environments. This position combines hands-on installation experience with strong diagnostic and service capabilities to ensure HVAC systems operate safely, efficiently, and according to manufacturer specifications and applicable codes.


The ideal candidate is a dependable problem-solver with strong technical knowledge of HVAC equipment, electrical and control systems, refrigeration, airflow, and mechanical systems. This individual should be comfortable working independently in the field, reading blueprints and schematics, communicating professionally with customers, and collaborating with project teams to complete installations and service work safely and efficiently.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


HVAC Installation



  • Install HVAC systems and equipment including rooftop units, split systems, furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers, boilers, VRF/VRV systems, VAV systems, exhaust systems, and energy recovery units.

  • Install and connect sheet metal, flexible ductwork, refrigerant piping, condensate piping, electrical components, controls, and related HVAC accessories.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and manufacturer specifications to determine equipment layouts and installation requirements.

  • Complete equipment start-up, commissioning, and system testing to verify proper operation.

  • Inspect installations for leaks, airflow concerns, wiring issues, and other conditions that could impact system performance.

  • Ensure installations meet manufacturer specifications, local building codes, safety requirements, and company quality standards.


Service, Diagnostics & Repair



  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial HVAC equipment and related mechanical systems.

  • Perform advanced diagnostics involving electrical, refrigeration, airflow, and mechanical components.

  • Troubleshoot compressors, motors, electrical components, refrigerant circuits, sensors, controls, and other HVAC system components.

  • Perform preventive and routine maintenance to improve system reliability and reduce equipment breakdowns.

  • Identify potential equipment failures and recommend appropriate repairs, replacements, or system improvements.

  • Interpret wiring diagrams, ladder logic, sequences of operation, and technical manuals when diagnosing system issues.


Controls & Building Automation



  • Install, troubleshoot, and repair control wiring, sensors, actuators, relays, thermostats, and low-voltage circuits.

  • Interface with Building Automation Systems (BAS) to assist with troubleshooting communication, controls, and sequence-of-operation issues.

  • Identify improper wiring, failed controls, sensors, or programming concerns that may impact HVAC system performance.

  • Verify proper operation of economizers, VAV boxes, static pressure controls, ventilation systems, and other HVAC control components.

  • Recommend control upgrades, equipment improvements, and energy-efficiency opportunities when appropriate.


Airflow & System Performance



  • Test airflow and system performance to ensure equipment is operating according to design requirements.

  • Perform airflow adjustments and basic air balancing on HVAC systems.

  • Use tools such as manometers, anemometers, flow hoods, pressure gauges, thermometers, and other HVAC diagnostic equipment.

  • Identify airflow restrictions, ductwork concerns, ventilation issues, and system performance problems.

  • Recommend corrective actions to improve comfort, efficiency, airflow, and overall equipment performance.


Customer Service & Team Collaboration



  • Communicate technical findings, repair recommendations, and system concerns clearly to customers, building owners, facility managers, contractors, and supervisors.

  • Educate customers on proper operation, maintenance, and care of HVAC equipment.

  • Complete accurate service documentation, work orders, equipment information, and recommendations.

  • Work collaboratively with installers, service technicians, project managers, contractors, and other team members.

  • Represent the company professionally and maintain a customer-first approach while working on jobsites.

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles in clean, safe, and working condition.


Skills and Qualifications



  • Minimum of 2–5+ years of HVAC installation and/or service experience; commercial HVAC experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of heating, cooling, ventilation, refrigeration, electrical, and airflow principles.

  • Experience installing, servicing, and troubleshooting commercial HVAC equipment.
