Job Summary
The Pharmacy Technician will prepare medications under the supervision of a pharmacist. This role involves working in an inpatient pharmacy setting, where responsibilities include measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and documenting medication dosages as per provider instructions. Key duties encompass:
- Unit dose dispensing and IV admixtures
- Compounding and managing automated dispensing devices
- Ensuring proper functioning of equipment and assisting with maintenance and repairs
- Supporting the pharmacist in delivering pharmaceutical care while adhering to established regulations and practices
- Participating in departmental problem-solving and quality assurance initiatives
- Assisting with billing functions and maintaining a safe working environment
Proficiency in various computer programs is required, and the role may involve a mix of retail and inpatient responsibilities depending on the location.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED is mandatory.
- Iowa: As of July 1, 2010, all pharmacy technicians must be nationally certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). If you are in a technician training program or have not previously worked as a pharmacy technician, registration as a pharmacy technician trainee is required within 30 days of starting employment. Certification must be achieved within 12 months.
- Minnesota: Individuals registering for the first time must be at least 18 years old and hold an active pharmacy technician registration with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy. Completion of a pharmacy technician training program provided by our organization (or an equivalent) is required within 12 months of registration.
- North Dakota: Pharmacy Technicians must register with the ND Board of Pharmacy before starting employment. Those applying as technicians in training must enroll in an ASHP accredited education program and obtain national certification within the timelines set by the Board.
- South Dakota: Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the SD Board of Pharmacy is required within 30 days of hire. Certification is necessary for specific roles, including those providing immunizations or working in remote pharmacies.
