The Paramedic provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) and emergency medical care to patients in both emergency and non-emergency situations. This position responds to 911 calls, assesses patient conditions, administers advanced medical treatment, transports patients, and documents patient care in accordance with North Carolina EMS regulations and medical protocols. Applicants must hold a current North Carolina Paramedic credential.



  • Respond to 911 emergency medical calls and provide ALS care if needed.
  • Assess injuries and illnesses and determine appropriate treatment priorities
  • Provide various treatment techniques including airway management, intravenous therapy, drug administration, cardiac monitoring and defibrillation and electrocardiogram strip interpretation. Provides appropriate medical care and procedures at the necessary ALS and/or BLS level.
  • Operate EMS fleet vehicles in a safe and efficient manner while traveling in and out of the County in emergency and non-emergency modes.
  • Transport patients safely to healthcare facilities.
  • Communicate patient information and telemetry data to receiving hospitals
  • Complete patient care reports and required documentation
  • Perform interfacility and palliative care transports
  • Inspect, maintain, and prepare EMS vehicles and equipment
  • Participate in continuing education and certification maintenance
  • Represent EMS at community events and special assignments as needed.


Candidates with experience in 911 EMS, Advanced Life Support (ALS), emergency medicine, ambulance operations, critical care transport, patient assessment, emergency response, or public safety are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and ability:
  • Knowledge of the principles of anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and transportation.
  • Knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents.
  • Knowledge of the street and road system and physical layout of the County.
  • Knowledge of ESO Data software.
  • Skill in assessing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with other emergency services agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, associates, patients and their families.

Minimum Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or its equivalent and required licenses or certifications. Starting salary will be determined by Transylvania County Human Resources based on experience and education submitted with your application, so please list all applicable education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • BCLS, ACLS, PHTLS/ITLS Provider Certifications, Instructor certifications preferred, NCOEMS Paramedic credential, NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 Certifications, CEVO Certification, HazMat Level I Responder Certification, Valid Driver's License.
Additional Requirements:
  • Successful completion of SBI background check with required fingerprinting by Sheriff Office.
  • Successful completion Transylvania County standard background check
  • Successful completion drug screening


Compensation details: 24.84-38.5 Hourly Wage
